Né dans une plantation de coton à la fin du 19ème siècle, Lead Belly est doté d’un talent inné pour la musique et d’un tempérament fougueux. Dans les années 1930, aux côtés de John Lomax, il enregistre un pan entier de la musique traditionnelle américaine avant de se rapprocher des mouvances de la gauche radicale. Malgré un talent reconnu, la signature de disques avec d’importants labels et l’enregistrement de standards de la pop music tels que « Black Betty », « The Midnight Special », « House of the Rising Sun », « Gallows Pole » ou encore « Where Did You Sleep Last Night ? »., sa carrière discographique ne décolle pas de son vivant. En 1949, quelques mois avant sa mort, il devient le premier musicien folk à jouer en Europe. Il est une référence pour de nombreux musiciens après lui. Né en Bretagne en 1988, Amaury Cornut vit et travaille désormais depuis le vignoble nantais.
