In Memoriam

In Memoriam

Autor: Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Número de Páginas: 218

Published in 1850, In Memoriam won its author the Poet Laureateship of Britain and received widespread attention from critics and reviewers, as well as from ordinary readers. The poem was written in memory of Tennyson’s close friend Arthur Henry Hallam, who died suddenly in 1833; it became an unofficial devotional manual for mourners, including Queen Victoria after the death of Prince Albert. The poem’s scope goes beyond individual grief, however, to the development and extinction of species, audaciously exploring history, evolution, and God’s relationship with humanity. Its formal beauty and emotional resonance make In Memoriam as compelling today as it was for nineteenth-century readers. Matthew Rowlinson’s introduction traces the poem’s composition history and places it in the context of Tennyson’s personal and intellectual development. Historical appendices include writings by Arthur Hallam, Victorian fiction on courtship and marriage, and materials on natural history and evolution.

Julián del Casal (in memoriam)

Julián del Casal (in memoriam)

Autor: Francisco Moran , Francisco Morán

Número de Páginas: 243

The compilation "La Habana Elegante. Segunda epoca. XV Anniversary (1998-2012). Julian del Casal (In Memoriam)" produced by prof. Francisco Moran offers a wide selection of memories, testimonies, and critical readings on Julian del Casal (Havana, 1863-1893), and of literary works inspired by his work and poetic figure that attest to the fascination that for already more than a century the poet of Nieve has exerted on Cuban and other Latin American writers. Included are texts from already classic authors such as: Ruben Dario, Jose Marti, Paul Verlaine, Jose Lezama Lima, Cintio Vitier, Dulce Maria Loynaz, Virgilio Piñera, Enrique J. Varona, Juan Marinello, etc. This selection shows the impact of Casal on the generation of Cuban writers of the 90s, who took him as a point of reference to critically examine the Cuban literary tradition. Among other important texts from those years are those authored by Antonio J. Ponte, Pedro Marques de Armas and Victor Fowler, which are already essential when evaluating Casal's critical reception and his permanent mark on Cuban poets. That's why this compilation is also a testimony to the modernity of Modernismo, because Casal emerges as an...

The poet's reputation has weathered even the most vitriolic attempts to discredit both the man and his writings; and as criticism of the late twentieth century demonstrates, Tennyson's claim to pre-eminence among the Victorians is now unchallenged."

Another Kind of Love

Another Kind of Love

Autor: Christopher Craft

Número de Páginas: 256

In a study that will be of interest to all those concerned with the politics of gender, the history of sexuality, and the erotics of reading, Christopher Craft investigates questions fundamental to any history of present sexualities. How does the modern binary homosexual/heterosexual relate to earlier formulations like "sexual inversion" and "sodomy"? What part does literature play in the development of such categories, or in a culture's resistance to them? And what are the implications for the creation and maintenance of the presumed "natural" male heterosexual subject? How has male heterosexual subjectivity been established as a bulwark against the attractions of a homosexual desire that is repeatedly incited by the very culture that condemns it? Craft examines the discourses of nineteenth-century psychiatry and sexology; some of Freud's central writings; and Tennyson's In Memoriam, Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, Stoker's Dracula, and Lawrence's Women In Love. In a study that will be of interest to all those concerned with the politics of gender, the history of sexuality, and the erotics of reading, Christopher Craft investigates questions fundamental to any history of ...

An Annotated Bibliography of Inuit Art

An Annotated Bibliography of Inuit Art

Autor: Richard C. Crandall , Susan M. Crandall

Número de Páginas: 465

Archaeological digs have turned up sculptures in Inuit lands that are thousands of years old, but "Inuit art" as it is known today only dates back to the beginning of the 1900s. Early art was traditionally produced from soft materials such as whalebone, and tools and objects were also fashioned out of stone, bone, and ivory because these materials were readily available. The Inuit people are known not just for their sculpture but for their graphic art as well, the most prominent forms being lithographs and stonecuts. This work affords easy access to information to those interested in any type of Inuit art. There are annotated entries on over 3,761 articles, books, catalogues, government documents, and other publications.

Tennyson and Tradition

Tennyson and Tradition

Autor: Robert Pattison

Número de Páginas: 204

Here is an analysis of Tennyson's major poetry that clarifies the poet's relationship to the artistic traditions he so extensively exploited and so radically modified. It is a portrait of Tennyson as manipulator, not mere borrower, of forms. Tennyson and Tradition traces the threads that at the same time unite Tennyson's work and tie it to the traditions the poet believed he had inherited. Pattison shows why Tennyson considered the venerable idyll form a fitting vehicle for his modern portraits--above all the Idylls of the King. Analysis of In Memoriam brings further understanding of Tennyson's poetic credo.

Stateliest Measures

Stateliest Measures

Autor: A. A. Markley

Número de Páginas: 262

The great nineteenth-century English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson received an unusually thorough education in the classical languages, and he remained an active classical scholar throughout his lifetime. His intimate knowledge of both Greek and Latin literature left an indelible stamp on his poetry, both in terms of the sound and rhythm of his verses and in the themes that inspired him. Stateliest Measures, the first full-length study of Tennyson's thematic and metrical uses of classical material, examines the profoundly important role that his classical background played as he fashioned himself into a poet in the 1820s and 30s, and as he defined himself as poet laureate as of 1850. A.A. Markley examines Tennyson's objectives in developing the classical dramatic monologue, which, together with In Memoriam and his experiments with classical meters, indicate the degree to which he patterned himself after the Roman poet Virgil in attempting to provide modern Britain with a literature worthy of a new and rapidly expanding world empire. Stateliest Measures demonstrates that Tennyson's engagement with the long-running and complex nineteenth-century debates concerning Hellenism,...
