Celos aun del aire matan

Autor: Juan Hidalgo

Número de Páginas: 281

Book URL: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rrb/b187.html This critical performing edition of the earliest extant Hispanic opera, Celos aun del aire matan, presents the most extensive surviving example of Hispanic baroque theatrical music. Designed for the Spanish royal court¿s festivities honoring the marriage of Infanta María Teresa of Spain and King Louis XIV of France, this passionate fiesta cantada in three acts was first produced in Madrid, thanks to the collaboration of court dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600¿1681) and composer Juan Hidalgo (1614¿85). The opera was designed for performance by a cast of young female actress-singers (the only role requiring a male voice is for a comic tenor) and a continuo band. This edition, which includes an extensive introduction, an edition and English translation of the Calderón text, and a unique loa from the 1682 Naples production, contributes to a better understanding of Hidalgo¿s music and the contribution of Hispanic music to early modern musical culture

The Strife of Tongues

Autor: Colin P. Thompson

Número de Páginas: 307

Fray Luis de Len (1527-91) is known chiefly as the author of some of the finest poetry of the Spanish Golden Age, but he also wrote important prose works in both Latin and Spanish, and produced eloquent translations into Spanish of biblical and classical texts. He spent five years imprisoned in solitary confinement by the Spanish Inquisition, fighting to clear himself of a series of accusations against his views on the Bible. Acquitted on all counts, he returned to teach at the University of Salamanca. This book examines the controversies in which Fray Luis was caught up, and investigates the complex influences upon his writings of his prison experiences, his indebtedness to Judaism, his interests as a linguist, and his work as a biblical scholar and theologian. Colin Thompson looks afresh at Fray Luis's most famous poems and prose works, and explores his understanding of language as a means of enabling God to speak to humanity and humanity to rise to God.

The Collected Works of St. Teresa of Avila, vol 2

Autor: Teresa of Avila

Número de Páginas: 504

This volume contains two of Teresa's most popular works: The Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle. Shortly after writing The Book of Her Life for her confessor, St. Teresa wrote The Way of Perfection at the request of her nuns who were eager to learn about prayer and contemplation. Throughout this work she teaches her nuns about prayer and also teaches us. Toward the end of her life, after she had experienced both the spiritual betrothal and spiritual marriage, Teresa wrote The Interior Castle, her own panoramic view of her relationship with God, from the lowest stages to the highest. Teresa here demonstrates her great gift for writing about that relationship and attracting us to explore the possibility of pursuing it. Along with these two classics, Volume Two also includes one of Teresa's minor works, her Meditations on the Song of Songs. Nothing provided

Friendship betrayed
